In Memoriam

Bruce Betty

The Town of McCandless sadly lost a cherished member of its family on May 17, 2022 when Bruce Girard Betty passed away. Bruce began his career with the Town on April 17, 1995 and served the residents of the Town as Land Use Administrator for over 25 years. Bruce was a U.S. Army veteran who took his commitment to public service very seriously.

Bruce was passionate about his work with the Town of McCandless. Of particular interest to him, was stormwater management and responsible development. In addition to his adept land use acumen, Bruce had a particular penchant for helping people. He spent countless hours on the phone assisting residents with land use issues, but also felt compelled to help residents with things that were not necessarily “part of his job description.” He had worked as a social worker for many years before making the McCandless Planning and Development Department his home. It was this experience that led Bruce to follow-up with residents who had social challenges resulting in property maintenance issues or aged residents who had difficulty understanding the Zoning Code. On many occasions, Bruce had reached out to social service organizations on behalf of residents of the Town. He was fiercely loyal to the Town and protective of his employees. His calm and affable demeanor was refreshing, always professional, and he was well-known by residents, developers and co-workers alike as easy to work with. He loved to travel and was an avid gardener, having a particular affinity for daylilies. He was so involved in the cultivation of daylilies that a particular cultivar bears his name.

Bruce will be greatly missed, and our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those who were positively impacted by his life well-lived. Funeral arrangements will be handled by Sperling Funeral Home in Wexford, PA.
