Trash, Recycling, & Yard Waste

WM McCandless community hub

NEW online service hub for McCandless residents!

Waste Management has set up a new, dedicated website for customers in the Town of McCandless!

The website — home.wm.com/mccandless-pa — is meant to be a one-stop resource for everything related to trash and recycling, including guidelines, pickup schedules (regular and holiday), and quick access to submit service requests and get in touch with WM.

Our community’s dedicated local site is the launching point for residents to do more with Waste Management, anytime, anywhere. Customers can access these simple self-service options 24/7. The site also includes helpful tips on proper recycling and other resources.

Bulk item changes in 2025

On January 1, a new bulk pickup policy through Waste Management took effect for McCandless residents. This allows for one free bulk item per week for residents.

Previously, if you had to get rid of a couch, you would be charged $10. If it was a large appliance like a refrigerator, it would be $15. Now, putting one of these items out for pickup incurs no charge (as long as it is only one per week).

With these new changes, there has been a higher volume of calls to Town Hall regarding issues and questions related to the service. Town officials reached out to Waste Management to discuss these questions so we could provide residents with the best information.

Do I need to schedule a bulk item?

Yes, residents need to schedule their item so drivers are aware they will be out for pickup.

Any additional items past the one free one also need to be scheduled and prepaid for. To schedule bulk please visit the online service hub.

What about extra trash bags?

One change that has caused some confusion: extra bags outside the trash cart now are always an extra charge. The charge is $6 per bag. This can be scheduled online.

Contacting Waste Management

The traditional way to reach out to WM for residents has been by calling 1-800-866-4460 and going through the company’s call center. However, residents often experience long wait times attempting to reach a live representative. WM has put out a guide on how customers can better navigate their phone system.

The best way to reach out to Waste Management and request services currently is through their online hub for McCandless residents

Customers can create an account and using their online service “My WM,” which is accessible at https://www.wm.com/us/en/user/login.

Many common issues (including scheduling bulk items) can be handled through the online support center at https://www.wm.com/us/en/support without having to have a My WM account.

Another option is to fill out a “contact back” support request online at https://www.wm.com/us/en/support/cb. Here, you can seek a returned call or email from Waste Management for your issue (without having to wait in the call center queue). After you submit, you'll quickly get confirmation and hear back within one to two business days.

Additionally, if the call center wait time is long, you can select to have a call back before hanging up.

A full rundown of ways to reach out to the company for your needs is available at https://www.wm.com/us/en/support/faqs/account/how-do-i-contact-wm-for-help.

Glass recycling in your cart is BACK

As of January 1, 2025, residents are able to dispose of glass in their blue-top recycling cart again.
